Because the movement of a satellite that is orbiting our planet is quite predictable, software applications can calculate a satellite’s position and can track its movements while in orbit. The Sebastian Stoff-developed Orbitron is such an application – it is a satellite tracking system that you can use on your Windows-powered PC.

Speaking about Windows, it must be mentioned that Orbitron provides support for any edition from Windows 9x and ME to Vista and Windows 7. To install the application, you need to download a 2MB executable, run it, then follow the instructions presented to you by a setup wizard. Among other things, this setup wizard will ask you to choose one of many supported languages and to choose between a full, compact, and custom installation. The full installation includes the Orbitron main files and the Orbitron screensaver.

By default, Orbitron starts in full screen mode. There’s a small button in the upper right hand corner of the interface – click it and you will be presented with a menu that lets you get out of full screen mode. This menu also lets you switch to Nightlife, hide the bottom panels and maximize the viewport on the application’s interface, and access the application’s settings.

Orbitron automatically checks to ensure it has the latest TLE files; from these files, info on 20,000 satellites can be loaded. The application also automatically checks for updates when you launch it.

If you’re a radio amateur, weather professional, satellite communications user, astronomer, astrologer, or UFO hobbyist, you are going to like the functionality that Orbitron has to offer. With this application by your side, you will be able to view the position of satellites at any given moment. There’s a handy and detailed Help file that will come in handy should you need any help in figuring out how Orbitron works.

Orbitron is free. The developer only asks to send him a card if you like the application.

You’re very well advised to get Orbitron if you need a free and powerful satellite tracking system.

Pros

The recommended system requirements for running Orbitron are very low (300 MHz processor, 32MB of RAM memory, 5Mb of free disk space, monitor capable of 800x600 resolution). The Nighlife option comes in handy when you don’t want the monitor’s brightness to disturb you. Orbitron automatically checks for updates and for TLE files. Orbitron shows the positions of satellites at any given moment. Orbitron is free. There’s a detailed Help file.

Cons

None that I could think of.
